AFFAIRS OF CHINA.

CONFIDENTIAL.

[November 12.]

SECTION 1.

[41644]

No. 1.

Sir J. Jordan to Sir Edward Grey.-(Received November 12.)

(No. 182.) (Telegraphic.) P.

CUSTOMS succession,

Peking, November 12, 1909.

I had an interview to-day with Na-t'ung and Liang Tun-yen, and spoke to them in the sense of the instructions contained in your telegram No. 181 of the 10th instant. They assured me that the Chinese Government had not forgotten the pledge given to us in February of last year. No application for a further extension of leave had yet been received from Sir Robert Hart, though the extension previously granted to him had expired to-day. Indeed, they only knew from the press that the Inspector- General was not leaving England till the spring.
